HISTORY
Originally called Seisho Gakuen (bible institute), Sacramento's first Japanese baptist church was established in November 1920 by Reverend Kiichi Hijikata along with six others. The church was located at 1530 Fifth Street. In 1922, Reverend Kiichi Hijikata went back to Japan and Reverend H.Y. Shibata took over. By July 1932, the baptismal church had over 90 members.
During the Japanese internment, the church housed many families’ belongings and after the war, it housed many people who lost their homes. The capital mall's redevelopment plan forced the church to relocate to 2900 29th Avenue.
The church moved to an online platform in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, holding weekly services online. Due to how old the church building was, the church board decided to sell it and moved to its present location at 8211 Sierra College Blvd, Roseville, California. Although it is officially still known as the First Japanese Baptist Church, it is commonly referred to by the nickname, the Granite Bay Japanese Church.
